There Is No Neutral: The Word of God Never Leaves Things the Way It Found Them, July 5, 2026

This week we continued our journey through the book of Acts in our series, Unstoppable: The Church on Mission. Sermon 36 took us to Acts 13:42-52, right on the heels of Paul's sermon in the synagogue at Pisidian Antioch. What we found there is that the word of God never leaves a room the way it found it.

The passage shows two responses to that one sermon, and they could not look more different. On one hand, the people begged Paul and Barnabas to come back and preach again the next Sabbath. They followed them out the door. When the next Sabbath came, almost the whole city showed up to hear the word of the Lord. That is a hungry response: a hunger that could not stay quiet, that spread from person to person until an entire city was listening.

On the other hand, when the religious leaders saw those crowds, Luke tells us they were filled with jealousy and turned to contradicting and reviling Paul. Interestingly, the word translated jealousy there is the same Greek word (zelos) used elsewhere in the New Testament for godly zeal, a burning passion for the Lord. Same capacity for passion, aimed in opposite directions. That is the whole point of this passage: you do not get to stay neutral toward the word of God. You either lean toward it or you pull away from it.

Paul and Barnabas did not back down. They spoke boldly, and when the door closed with the synagogue, they turned to the Gentiles, quoting God's ancient promise in Isaiah 49:6 that his salvation was always meant to reach the ends of the earth. When the Gentiles heard it, they rejoiced.

We also sat with the tension in verse 48, where some judged themselves unworthy of eternal life while others were appointed and believed. Both are true on the same page, and Luke never tries to resolve it. Human choice is real, and God's sovereign grace is real, and neither one cancels the other.

The chapter ends with Paul and Barnabas run out of town, shaking the dust off their feet just as Jesus instructed his disciples to do. And yet the believers who remained were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit. Persecution did not stop the word. It never does.
